Benjamin Collie Receives 2018 S.J. Garner Student Excellence Award

Benjamin Collie

EKU's PGA Golf Management program is pleased to announce that Benjamin Collie has been selected to receive the S.J. Garner Student Excellence Award for 2017-18. Benjamin is a senior Marketing, PGA Professional Golf Management major from Washington, W.V. He received the award at the PGA Golf Management spring awards reception May 11th at the Arlington Mule Barn.

According to program director Kim Kincer, “Ben is most deserving of the S.J. Garner Student Excellence award for several reasons. He is a young man who was focused in the classroom and was involved in our PGM Student Association since his freshman year. He was chosen to represent EKU at the 2016 PGA Leadership Conference and he spent a week in Augusta, Ga., working at the Masters golf tournament where he gained valuable experience in running a major golf event.”

Ben is completing his EKU education in his 7-month internship at Grandfather Mountain Golf Club, Linville, N.C.

The award was established in Dr. Garner's name to honor her contributions to the program. Beginning with the 2010-11 academic year, an outstanding student in the PGA Golf Management program (traditionally a junior or senior) will be selected based on their academic achievement, community service, participation in events, and representation of EKU. The awardee receives a crystal trophy and their name is inscribed on a permanent plaque housed in the PGA Golf Management suite.

An avid golfer herself, Dr. Garner retired as marketing faculty from EKU in 2009 following 25 years of dedicated service to her students, colleagues, and the University.
