Caviness Receives 2019 Horton Smith Award
Each year the PGA Horton Smith Award is given to recognize a PGA professional and a model educator of PGA professionals. The 2019 Kentucky PGA Section (KPGA) recipient of the Horton Smith Award is EKU's Tyler Caviness.
Mr. Caviness has always had a strong interest in golf since he learned as a child, and decided to make a career of it. Mixing golf with his passion for education, Tyler found his dream job as a PGA professional at EKU.
“Like a lot of people in the golf business, I learned to play golf when I was young and it became my favorite sport. I worked at a course when I was in high school and a friend recommended that I look at colleges with golf management programs so that I could have a career in the golf industry. I enjoyed working in golf, resorts in particular, because every day was something different and I was never stuck behind a desk doing the same job.
I grew up in a family of teachers so education has always been in my life. After graduating from Methodist University, I thought that if I ever had a chance to work with golf management students in a college setting, I would take it. Education is very important and it is very rewarding to see our students progress through school and become colleagues in the industry. If I can help with that process, it only makes it better.”
This award gives special recognition to an individual PGA Member for outstanding continuous contributions to PGA education. These nominees demonstrate outstanding qualities of leadership, strong moral character. They are model educators of PGA Golf Professionals, maintain a substantial record of service to the association as well as the game of golf.
“Congratulations, Tyler, on receiving this well-deserved award! Your demonstration of the importance of education to our students truly makes a difference. You represent PGA Golf Management and Eastern Kentucky University well!” said Kim Kincer, director of EKU PGA Golf Management.
A national Horton Smith Award winner will be selected from the 41 PGA Selection Award winners in November 2019.
“I am very happy to receive the 2019 Horton Smith Award and I am thankful for the selection by the KPGA Special Awards Committee. It is always nice to be acknowledged by your peers for your work. I am fortunate to work with a great group of people in a job that I really enjoy,” said Caviness.
