Hughes Selected for 2010-11 S.J. Garner Student Excellence Award

Heath Hughes with PGM Director Kim Kincer

EKU's PGA Golf Management program is pleased to announce that Heath Hughes has been selected as recipient of the S.J. Garner Student Excellence Award for 2010-2011. Hughes is a senior Marketing, PGA Golf Management Option major from Hebron, Ky. He received the award at the PGA Golf Management spring awards banquet in April.

According to Tyler Caviness, PGA/GM Program Coordinator, "Heath was selected based on his academic achievements, his representation of  the program and EKU, and his service to our program as Vice President of the student association."  Heath is currently completing his final internship at Interlachen Country Club in Minneapolis, Minn., and will be moving to Arizona for the winter months.

Program Director Kim Kincer said, "Heath Hughes will represent EKU and our PGA Golf Management program well as he begins his career in the golf industry. He was an excellent student and an outstanding role model for his peers in PGA Golf Management."

The award was established in Dr. Garner's name to honor her contributions to the program. Beginning with the 2010-11 academic year, an outstanding student in the PGA Golf Management program (traditionally a junior or senior) will be selected based on their academic achievement, community service, participation in events, and representation of EKU. The awardee receives a crystal trophy and their name is inscribed on a permanent plaque housed in the PGA Golf Management suite.

An avid golfer herself, Dr. Garner retired as marketing faculty from EKU in 2009 following 25 years of dedicated service to her students, colleagues, and the University.
