In Memory of Mr. John Hines
On October 19, the alumni of the PGA Golf Management program, staff, and students at EKU hosted a tournament for a very important cause in the John Hines Classic. Forty-eight people played on 12 teams in a four-person scramble. The event raised $3,501.86 to create a scholarship for deserving PGM students. John Hines was the head golf professional at the University Club at Arlington where the tournament was held.
Early last year, John was diagnosed with ALS, also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease and he unfortunately passed away in May, 2018. Hines spent much of his career honoring others, and has been recognized for his achievements. A major achievement was received in 2011 by the PGA of America when he was given the National Patriot Award. Hines was committed and dedicated to the men and women who serve our country and created a tournament for veterans who have returned home from service abroad. So far, the tournament has raised $60,000 for the Fold of Honor Foundation. Now it is our turn to honor Mr. Hines.
Hines started as the Head Golf Professional at the University Club at Arlington on September 15, 2015. He was one of only eight in this position since the founding of the club in 1967. Most of John’s 20 years as a golf professional were spent as Director of Golf at Baiting Hollow Golf club in Baiting Hollow, NY.
EKU’s Director of PGA Golf Management, Kim Kincer said, “John has been an advocate for our program and done an excellent job as head professional at Arlington. We are honoring John, raising money and awareness.”
