PGA Golf Management Takes on the Jones Cup

EKU Jones Cup Team with faculty advisor Mr. Ross Lingenfelder

Every November since 2007, EKU’s PGA Golf Management program has fielded a team to compete in the PGA Jones Cup. This year's Jones Cup took place November 4–6 in Port St. Lucie, Fl.

Named for Dr. S. Rowland Jones the first director at Mississippi State PGM program, this tournament signifies professionalism, integrity, sportsmanship, and camaraderie through completion, all of which were traits taught by Dr. Jones. The event is also coordinated by the same staff as the first class PGA of America tournaments and presents an invaluable experience to the students and staff alike. The Jones Cup consists of 36 holes and features the top five players from each of the nineteen PGA Golf Management Universities.

The 2013 EKU Jones Cup team:

  • Aaron Hieneman (junior), Greenup, Ky.
  • Aaron Spencer (senior), Oakdale, Pa.
  • Matthew Duwel (senior), Cincinnati, Oh.
  • Mikal Harpster (junior), Warrenton, Mo.
  • Micah Voorhis (junior), Tipton, In.

EKU’s candidates undergo a rigorous selection process to earn one of the five spots on the team. Three spots are reserved for the students who have accumulated the most points during weekly fall semester tour events. The remaining two students are hand-picked by PGA Golf Management staff after careful review. All of the students selected must be in academic good standing in the PGA Golf Management program.

“This is a great opportunity to compete against other PGM universities and it provides our students a chance to get off campus and network at the same time,” stated Ross Lingenfelder, the program’s Player Development and Recruiting Coordinator. Students are likely to encounter many industry professionals at the event, have the opportunity to expand their networking possibilities, as well as make lasting friendships.

Since its beginning in 2002 the Jones Cup has given students an opportunity to showcase their talents on the national level, helping to distinguish themselves among their peers. “Our goal is to improve upon the previous year’s finish,” commented Lingenfelder. These EKU students represent the top performers in a highly competitive and exceptional program here in the School of Business. It is with great pleasure that Eastern Kentucky University congratulates the Jones Cup team on your accomplishment.
