Opal & Kermit Patterson Scholarship
Patterson Memorial Endowed Scholarship
History
The Patterson Scholarship was established in 1997 by Kermit and Opal Patterson, who both previously taught at Eastern Kentucky University, Kermit, specifically, in the School of Business. The Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students majoring in areas of study including—General Business (e.g., Corporate Communications and Technology; General Business, Global Supply Chain, International Business), Management (e.g., Human Resource Management, Management), and/or Marketing (e.g., Professional Golf Management, Marketing, Marketing Research and Analytics, Music Marketing).
All applications are carefully reviewed by faculty serving on the Patterson Scholarship Committee. Minimum application qualifications include—a competitive ACT composite score, a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) cumulative GPA, and evidence of leadership activities. Also considered will be the applicant's formal letter of application, professional resume, letters of recommendation, and transcript. Selected Patterson Scholars will represent the College of Business in formal and informal settings at all times and they will engage in professional development activities.
Selection Criteria
First-time applicants (current EKU students, high school seniors, and transfer students) must satisfy the following criteria:
- Student must declare a major in an area of Management, Marketing, or General Business.
- Student must have a minimum university GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Incoming freshman must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Student must have attained competitive ACT composite score.
- Student must show evidence of leadership activities.
Renewal Criteria
- Student must continue to be a declared major in Management, Marketing, or General Business.
- Student must maintain a minimum university GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Student must show evidence of leadership activities.
Steps to Apply
First-time applicants:
- Submit an official copy of your transcript, complete through the fall semester of your senior year of high school. Transfer students must submit an official copy of their current transcript.
- Submit a formal letter stating your reasons for wanting to attend EKU and major in Management, Marketing, or General Business. This letter should include any information not specified in your resume that you would like the Committee to know about you.
- Submit two letters of recommendation from such people as your principal, guidance counselor, teacher, or employer.
- Submit a resume highlighting high school or university activities, as well as work-related activities. Evidence of leadership should be emphasized.
Applicants for renewal:
- Submit a formal letter describing your progress in your area of study, the career path you hope to follow with such a degree, and evidence of leadership abilities that distinguish you from your peers.
- Submit one letter of recommendation from such people as a faculty member, advisor, or employer.
- Submit a resume highlighting high school or university activities, as well as work-related activities. Evidence of leadership should be emphasized.
All application materials must be uploaded via scholarships.eku.edu no later than March 1 for the next academic year. Late applications will be considered only if funds allow.
